The Jumbo Brown Coturnix is a species of Japanese quail that is plump in stature with a full, earthy brown coloring. They are a fast-growing, entry level game bird for meat and egg production as well as conservation. Egg production starts at only 6 weeks of age and are very solid production bird. They can be maintained well using a commercial game bird or turkey starter feed.
Quail need a slightly different setup than chickens; they do really well in little “quail-tractors” or a rabbit-hutch style houses. They do not roost, but rather, like to have a small shelter on the ground to sleep and lay their eggs in. They are amazingly cold hardy and lay more than our chickens! During the laying season they lay 1 egg nearly every day, and will lay 300+ eggs per year if given supplemental lighting in the winter.
